A law intern's look at China and Chinese law.

An insight: being a lawyer involves a lot more than law.

When I first came here as an intern I thought I would be, honestly, useless to the firm.  I don't have any formal training in law and have read close to nothing about law.

Surprise Surprise!  There is plenty to do in a law firm if you don't know much about law.  And I don't mean brew coffee, make copies, and file files.  I don't count that as something.  For example, I do a ton of public relations and advertising (this blog being a part of that) and I get to learn about law by helping to prepare presentations on current hot topics in law, like mergers and acquisitions.

Then I find out that people who actually know how to practice law don't always spend a majority of their time doing it.  For example, they go out and give weekly lectures at universities.  Mr. Lehman is going to give lectures to students from the Chinese University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) here at the Lehman, Lee & Xu office called the CUPL Lehman Practical Lectures Series.  I figure that he does it both to help educate and to get the name of the firm out and about.  It seems to me that "brand name" is just as important in the law world as it is with tennis shoes and purses.

So, in a lot of ways, I'm a PR man here at Lehman, Lee & Xu.  But that's ok, because from what I've gathered in a month, Mr. Lehman does a lot of PR and he's the boss.
