A law intern's look at China and Chinese law.

Hurrah for Holidays

Good news everyone! I'm taking off on a weeklong trip to China's Yunnan and Sichuan provinces!  Well, good news for me, at least.  If you really enjoy this blog, you'll be sorely disappointed. Smiley

Anyway, to celebrate, I will be reporting on a recently proposed Chinese law that petitions for more Chinese holidays.  Ji Baocheng, a Chinese lawmaker as well as the president of the Remin University of China, feels that China's cultural awareness and unity needs a boost.  He feels that recognizing traditional holidays, like the Dragon Boat Festival or Tomb Sweeping Day, will help promote national cohesiveness and awareness of China's tradition.  He feels that China's youth are more aware of the foreign Valentine's Day than China's own holidays and are, in some cases, ignorant of the histories of traditional holidays.

Well, I think I can wholeheartedly support this bill.  I do think that Thanksgiving, July 4th, and other holidays do teach me about my nation's history and do make me feel closer to my nation.  I know that on July 4th a large part of America is celebrating our nation's independence and, if I think about, I do realize that I am part of a national activity.

So support holidays and vacations.  They are good for the soul and good for the nation.  See you in a week!
